Oud-Zuid, on the edge of De Pijp
Hendrik Amsterdam Old Dutch pancakes near the Museumplein
On the Ruysdaelstraat, on the border of Oud-Zuid and De Pijp, a few minutes from the Museumplein. Here we bring the Vreeland tradition into the city: a village inside Amsterdam.
The doors opened here on 9 December 2025. After a thorough renovation the building feels like an old-fashioned Dutch house: warm, easy and informal.
In winter the stove keeps things warm, and children can lose themselves in our little puppet theatre.
We bake our pancakes with the same heritage flour and to the same family recipe as in Vreeland. Alongside them we serve a full lunch, drinks and evening menu with Dutch classics and changing seasonal dishes.

A birthday, a team outing, a family dinner or drinks: the room can be closed off and seats 60 guests. Hiring the whole restaurant is possible too. E-mail us the date and the number of guests and we will think along about the layout and the menu.

Frequently asked questions
Can I eat gluten free, lactose free or vegan at Hendrik?
Yes. Every pancake on the menu can be made with gluten free, lactose free or vegan batter. We also bake without milk or without egg. Tell us about your allergy when you order; we work in a kitchen that also handles gluten and we will tell you honestly what is and is not possible.
What makes a Hendrik pancake different?
The flour. Our batter is made with heritage flour from the De Ruiter windmill in Vreeland: wheat, buckwheat, corn, barley and rye. Five grains instead of one, which makes the pancake fuller in flavour. Both restaurants bake with the same flour.
Are the menus in Vreeland and Amsterdam the same?
Largely, yes: the same batter and the same classics. There are small differences in dishes and prices, so this site carries the menu of each restaurant separately, with the prices that apply there.
Can I come with children?
Please do. There is a children’s menu of its own, For small Hendriks and Hendrikas, with a Children’s Party pancake they decorate themselves with sweets. In Vreeland there is a garden with a wishing well, in Amsterdam a little puppet theatre.
How do I book for a large group?
From seven people we ask you to e-mail rather than call. For Vreeland that is info@restauranthendrik.nl, for Amsterdam amsterdam@restauranthendrik.nl. Depending on the size of the party you order à la carte or we put together a set menu with you.
Can I hire the Amsterdam restaurant?
Yes. The restaurant has two rooms that can be closed off from one another; the separate room seats 60 guests. Hiring the whole restaurant is possible too. E-mail amsterdam@restauranthendrik.nl with the date and the number of guests.
