On the Vecht
Hendrik Vreeland Pancakes in a coach house on the Vecht
In the middle of the village of Vreeland, in a former coach house with a large sheltered terrace and a garden. Since 1967 a familiar place to stop during a walk, a bike ride or a trip along the Vecht.
Restaurant Hendrik used to be called Noord-Brabant. We took it over in October 2021 and it reopened in 2022 after a thorough renovation that kept its classic character. What stayed: the handmade pancake, and the homely, cosy, old Dutch feeling.
The terrace is sheltered and faces the sun, with terrace heating, so it is a good place to sit in winter too. Inside, the wood stove burns on cold days. Behind the restaurant lies the wishing garden, with a wishing well and a garden house in the green. Will you come and make a wish?
Besides the pancakes the menu carries classics people have been coming back for for years, and seasonal dishes all year round: soups, cheese fondue, mussels. Those are on the chalkboard, and we are happy to talk you through them.
Something to celebrate
For a birthday, a party or drinks after the ceremony. Getting married in the Sint Nicolaaskerk of Vreeland, a baby on the way, or looking for a lunch, a brunch, a high tea or a meeting? We have a separate room with its own entrance for a private party.
Think of a brunch on the terrace or a reunion in the front room. We also love hosting children’s parties: two hours of games, a pancake to decorate, lemonade, an ice cream, and a present to take home at the end. Drinks with the parents afterwards are of course possible too.
Getting here
By car
Hendrik sits in the middle of the village and is easy to reach via the N201. Vreeland is about twenty minutes from Amsterdam, Hilversum and Utrecht. There is plenty of public parking in the village and it is free. There is most room on the west side of the village, before the bridge over the Vecht. There are 22 extra spaces on the Sperwerveld, a 200 metre walk, at the junction of Raadhuislaan and Kleizuwe. You may drive across the bridge, but mind the narrow passage.
By bike
There is plenty of bicycle parking, and we have charging points for electric bikes.
By boat
Moor along the bank of the Vecht. Mooring is free for up to 24 hours. Cross the bridge and you will find us on the left-hand side of the Breedstraat.
By public transport
Bus 522 runs to Vreeland from Weesp, Nigtevecht and Loenen.

Frequently asked questions
Can I eat gluten free, lactose free or vegan at Hendrik?
Yes. Every pancake on the menu can be made with gluten free, lactose free or vegan batter. We also bake without milk or without egg. Tell us about your allergy when you order; we work in a kitchen that also handles gluten and we will tell you honestly what is and is not possible.
What makes a Hendrik pancake different?
The flour. Our batter is made with heritage flour from the De Ruiter windmill in Vreeland: wheat, buckwheat, corn, barley and rye. Five grains instead of one, which makes the pancake fuller in flavour. Both restaurants bake with the same flour.
Are the menus in Vreeland and Amsterdam the same?
Largely, yes: the same batter and the same classics. There are small differences in dishes and prices, so this site carries the menu of each restaurant separately, with the prices that apply there.
Can I come with children?
Please do. There is a children’s menu of its own, For small Hendriks and Hendrikas, with a Children’s Party pancake they decorate themselves with sweets. In Vreeland there is a garden with a wishing well, in Amsterdam a little puppet theatre.
Can I book a table on the terrace in Vreeland?
No, we cannot promise a table on the terrace in advance. The terrace is large, so there is usually room, and on arrival we will happily find you a table outside if we can.
How do I book for a large group?
From seven people we ask you to e-mail rather than call. For Vreeland that is info@restauranthendrik.nl, for Amsterdam amsterdam@restauranthendrik.nl. Depending on the size of the party you order à la carte or we put together a set menu with you.
Can I get takeaway from Hendrik?
In Vreeland, yes. Pancakes come in a box, with the sugar and syrup packed separately. You can also collect our home-made soups, coffee in a cup to go, a cold bottle of wine or a portion of bitterballen for the boat. Call ahead: +31 294 231 517.
May I moor my boat?
Yes. You may moor along the bank of the Vecht free of charge for up to 24 hours. Then cross the bridge; we are on the left-hand side of the Breedstraat.
